Classic car importer / restorer: Deposit Paid but work not being done, Advice please.

HI,

I'm looking for some advice please.

In March 2009, I agreed a deal with a classic car importer / restorer to import and restore (a listing of required work was agreed) a vehicle for me. I paid a deposit of 50% of the total agreed price.

The vehicle landed in Ireland in May 2009. I was told then that he had some other jobs which were ahead of mine and to contact him again in a month or so. Every time I have contacted him since, the start date of my job has been postponed further and further.

In my last correspondance I challenged him on this and he told me I can take the car as is now paid in full from the deposit or wait and he'll do it when he does it. I don't want to take the car as is as I do not have the expertese to do the necessary work myself.

What are my rights and is there anything I can do to get him to live up to his side of the bargain. My preferance is to have the vehicle as agreed or money back but I don;t want to continue with this open ended "it'll be done when its done" business.

Please advise, Thanks.

What type of car is it? I have an interest in VW Beetles and there are a number of restorers in Ireland. Might be worth shopping around and making a few phonecalls - if it costs you the same to have the vehicle restored and on the road sooner but with a different crwod, it may be worth it. May 2009 is a longtime to wait for sure! Ring around, check out the Irish classic car forums and get somefeedback. Be sure if you do decide to change mechanics etc that you get to see / talk to previous customers and if they are happy. In my experience the majority will be very happy to give feedback. Best of luck!

Its a vw.

Spoke to the guy since and told him I either want my money back or work to start ASAP.

He has committed to start work within the next 2 weeks so fingers crossed!

Lots of VW restorers in Ireland - some advertise more strongly than others but do not always presume that this means they are the best. Hope he gets moving on your vehicle and you have it on the road soon. Best of luck!
