is it possible to do this on line now or do i still have to go into the tax office and queue for hours on end?
 
You never had to queue for hours on end at the tax office. You only ever had to file the relevant forms or just write to Revenue with the relevant details (e.g. what you are claiming and perhaps a copy of your P60 and other relevant evidenc). What are you trying to claim for?

I do it by post, just about to send off my 2006 tax return.

I also amended by 2007 tax credits by post, although some of these can be done online.
