I pay my parents x amount per month rent (the joys of home living!). I'd like to claim this back for the last couple of years.
I've heard mixed responses of whether or not you can do this and then the various effects it may have on my parents.
I need their PRSI number and then fill out the form with the amount I pay each month or whatever, added up for each year. Do I need any backup for this? Do I need to get receipts off them?
What sort of effect is this going to have on them? Is there a certain amount they can earn without getting taxed extra?
I believe that a Finance Act in recent years put an end to the possibility of parents claiming rent a room relief on money paid to them by children and of children claiming the rented accommodation tax credit in respect of such payments. I may be wrong but that's what I recall from threads in the past year or so on this issue here on AAM.
Parents cannot claim relieft meaning that anything I claim back in tax for rent is then claimed back from them? Or do you mean from 2007 I can't claim back full stop?
What about before that? Can I claim back for before 2007 still?
