Claiming GP expenses

I wish to reclaim an amount for GP expenses paid in the tax year. All I have to go on are cheque stubs - suffice is to say I didn't ask for or keep all receipts issued at the time of visit.

A colleague has said that revenue do not query the amount (i.e. ask for proof of expenditure) if the claim is under a certain threshold.

Anyone here know if this is true and, if so, what the threshold amount is ?

they dont ask for proof, but expect you to hold onto the receipts, if you have the cheque stubs then can you ask the doctor for a copy of the receipts for those dates?
 
In the case of GPs, you do not need a receipt for every single visit.

One receipt will suffice provided that the date and charge of each visit is itemised (unlike VHI).
Chances are anyway that you will not need it, but better to be sure.
 
I think you have to hold on to the receipts for 4 or 5 years in case revenue decide to audit you. I have being claiming medicial expenses for the last few years, held on to receipts but thankfully have not been audited. I havn't heard of anyone been audited either

Yeah - I was going to do that but once mention was made of a threshold, I wondered was it necessary.
 
Perhaps the threshold in question is the €125 (individual) or €250 (more than one person claim) p.a. of [broken link removed] (including, among other things, GP charges) under which tax relief is not available? Tax relief is only granted (at standard rate) above that amount.

I have got tax relief on medicial expenses at my marginal rate i.e. 42%
 
Oops, sorry - my mistake. Medical expenses relief is at one's marginal rate on qualifying expenses over the relevant threshold. Thanks for correcting me.

The context in which the 'advice' was given was "sure if it's under €xxx they don't bother looking for receipts".

I think it prudent to get the receipts, or some form of statement, just to be safe.
 
Had a claim for medical expenses last year for 2200, had all receipts, all my own expenses so threshold 125E. Didnt send them in, wasnt asked for them. Got nice cheque back for over 800E.
