I am reading the different ways a married couple can be assessed by the revenue and have realsied that hubbie and I are probably after missing out lots being assessed singly instead of joint assessment especially as I was on maternity leave twice. We married in 2005 and have had 2 kids since - is it possible to change the way we are assessed now and claim back tax that we may have over paid or is there a time limit of back dating these things?

Trying to get all the pennies I can at the moment!!

You can go back 4 tax years prior to the current year so you can go back to 2005.

See here for an explanation. The figures are for 2006 but you get the idea

You say you are singly assessed, but perhaps you did not tell the tax office you got married.

For single assessment you have to make an actual election.

Joint assessment is automatic on marriage, so file jointly now to reclaim any refunds.
