Without going into too much details.
There is a claim going in for underpinning on my late father’s house, and the insurance is now up at xmas. And the existing insurance company will not quote for renewal. So what can I do?

Because if 40000euro underpinning, I cant insure a house worth 400000? In the event of a fire.

Im I snookered? Is there insurance companies that will insure a house with a claim?
What happens if I don’t tell the new insurer about the claim?
Should the existing insurance company be obliged to quote like motor insurance after a claim?

Any advice is welcome.

are the current insurers refusing to renew purely because of the underpinning or is there any other reason?

It is your late father's house - is it occupied or unoccupied?

You cannot simply take out another policy with a different company without telling them that your current insurer will note renew. The new company will require full details of why. You should write to ceo of your current insurers asking for a detailed explanation as to why they will not renew if it is purely on the underpinning. You should be able to find the name of who to complain to in the policy or indeed if you phoen them. You can also complain to financial regulator.

The house is currently unoccupied, I rang the Insurance company and the main reason why the insurance company will not renew is because there is a claim of 40,000 approx on the policy, the claim is in since sept 07 and
no work has started on the underpinning yet, and no claim has been paid yet.
I rang the financial regulator, who told me the Insurance Company is within there rights to refuse renewal. they have to quote you for motor insurance but not for House. He said to ring brokers as they might have a specialist insurer that might take on the Risk, but with a higher fee.

Bottom line is that if my father house burns to the ground after the policy expires, i will lose a lot more than the price of underpinning.

Its a crazy situation, and should be spelt out more clearly to the public by the insurance company that you will not get insurance for a few years if you claim.

Without knowing any other details, I would think that the unoccupancy is a problem. The outstanding claim might complicate matters further, but you are not simply being refused, ibecause of the claim. Most insurers will not give what is loosely termed'comprehensive ' insureance, but migth consider fire cover only. Ask the current insurers if they will consider fire only cover.
