CIW (Certified Internet Web Professional) group Certificates - Opinions?

Hi,

Has anyone here ever done any of the certification programs with the CIW (Certified Internet Web Professional) group?

I am thinking of doing the CIW Foundations certificate followed by the CIW Site Designer certificate. I was just wondering if anyone had a good experience doing them or any advice.

I looked into them some years ago when I was working in that area and decided that they weren't worth the high fees they were looking for. I've never seen any employer look for them either.

Do you want to do them for the skills or the accreditation? I found that building a site portfolio was of more benefit in developing my skills, and as I say, I never had anyone look for accreditation from me.

I was thinking more about the accreditation. I would have a fairly good grounding in most of the topics already.

I didn't think the fees were too bad. The foundation course is €120 with FAS.
 
Oh, that's not bad at all. I was looking at a few hundred pounds a few years ago, but that was probably down to the college offering it.

In that case it's up to you. Are you trying to move into this area or have you already got some experience?
 
I already work in the IT industry as a programmer but I am very interested in web design. It's more like a hobby.

I thought it would be good if I decided in the future that I could do some web design in my spare time for small companies. No definite plan yet, it's just an idea.
 
Ah, I see. In that case yes, it's the small companies who have no knowledge of the web who might look favourably on CIW. Anyone within industry is going to be looking for sites you've done and specific skills and experience.
 
I think I'll look into it further. I've just finished a very long course so I'll take a break for a while.

Hi,

When you sign up to do the course do they provide you with text books? Or is it more a framework that is provided and you have to find out the information yourself on the topics (by looking up websites, finding books on the topics...) that will be covered in the exam?

Did you think it was a worthwhile exercise?
 
No they dont provide you with text books. They give you the name of the course book which you go out and buy. We were given some course notes on the different topics covered.
The course book will have past exam papers which are useful.

Im doing mine one night a week for 2 hours, which is quite short, so the material is covered at a very fast pace
