Someone managed to delete the network settings from my mothers pc over Christmas....
She has eircom's Netopia modem for broadband.

The PC has no network settings, they appear to be gone.
Another laptop in the house can pick up wireless broadband ok.
A Mac can connect ok as well via Ethernet cable.

So the modem and its settings are ok, I just need to re-create the network settings on the machine.

The eircom installer isn't very clear about this problem .
Any suggestions welcome.

the router is more than likely setup for dhcp automatically gives an ip address.

Go to contolr panel network and internet.

Right click on loacal area connect and properties.

make sure everything is set to auto.

Other wise go to the laptop

start run type in cmd to bring up a dos window

type ipconfig hit return to get the ip address it is using

add 10 to the ip address and set this into the other pc.

open a dos window and try to ping the address of he default gateway.

ping 192.168.1.1

should reply 4 times.

try swapping the network cable with the one on the mac.

It turns out that the network card was not being detected by the PC, so no card, no settings, no internet.

It was fixed by taking the network card out of the motherboard slot, blowing the fluff and dust off, replacing the card in another slot. Turned on machine, hey presto, internet is back.

It only took everal hours, weekend conversations, a support call and a large gin & tonic.
