chip tuning

Don't just give your care more "go" as a cheap fix.

Upgrade the brakes and suspension as well and then learn how to use the whole package.

Treat yourself to an advanced driving course.

I'd agree with Kceire. Well worth the money. Had my octy oil burner remapped 6 months ago. It has transformed the car. The extra torque makes for safe smooth overtaking. As long as you don't trash the car you won't have any difficulties. Most of the re-maps done on cars within the VW/audi group are very standard and are tried and tested. If you need further info on re-mapping look at the Vagdrivers/Briskoda forums for plenty of useull info.

does it not invalidate your car insurance???

no--

not if you tell them and its added to your policy/premium.
some companies charge more for a remap others charge very very little which i was surprized about!

This is a 6 year old car.
Increasign the power in an older engine like this can be a recipe for disaster.
Its not so much that the power increase is that earth-shattering.
The owner naturally uses the car harder, for longer - it gets thrashed.

FWIW

Who are these companies? I'd be interested to know.

6 year for diesel engine is nothing if you know how to drive it. even with increased power can drive for few more years easily. my car has 100k miles at the moment, i am sure it will do at least 100k miles more after remap.
anyone heard about http://www.tunemyecu.com ? they looks ok and are quite cheap.

So would I!!

my policy went up €35 after i got the remap. im with RSA through a broker.

Quinn just said point blankly No, we can insure you with the modification!

dont forget guys, a remap is not just about power, there are all sorts of different remaps available. www.autoremap.ie carries our fuel efficient remaps to big truck companies, he told me that one company he done before saved an average of 1-2mpg on each truck which was something like 40k off their year fuel bill!

That's really good - my quote went up €150 ish when I said I had a remap :(
It was about a 25% power increase though.

Must check to see if they'll insure me...

Edit - they will but it's a lot more expensive than my current insurer...

mine went from 163bhp to 190bhp so only a circa 16% increase, maybe thats where they calculate the premiums from.

i had mine rolling roaded to proove the power too which i had to send into them.

Let's say I'm seduced by all this remapping talk :D

Where do you get it tested on a rolling road - any garage, or a specialist facility?

TIA

theres a few places that can dyno the car for you.

Westward Engineering in Enfield. - http://www.westwardeng.com/
CDA in Dunboyne. - http://www.couture-auto.com/
Track Day Performance in Rathnew. - http://www.tdp.ie/

all charge about 50-60e for a 2WD dyno run, they will probably run it 3 times for that charge to get a proper reading.

Be careful with chipping cars or trucks. SOME engines are produced in different HP bands with no change to turbos etc, but others have stronger pistons, crankshafts etc. So increasing the power MAY lead to prematur engine failure.
