Has anyone had a chimney damper installed on there chimney and would they recommend it. Have seen this one from www.Eco-fficiency.ie . It looks like a good idea but at a cost of €357 to have it fitted, would love to hear if anyone has one.

A "chimney balloon" might be a cheaper alternative. Do a search for that term to find a number of relevant threads.

I got the chimney damper installed about 10 days ago. But now find it is stuck and we can't open it to light a fire! The guy is hopefully coming this week to fix it claiming that the fire cement made it stick. I liked the idea of it as a permanent fixture and the guy was informative and helpful. may this will be the only problem - hard to know at this early stage. Will let you know how it goes.
Update on this-the guy came out and it was the cement and fixed easily - would highly recommend it as you can easily and quickly open and close the chimney with no mess involved

Just wondering how this has worked out for you. Am thinking of investing in one.

I saw a good idea a couple of years ago. The damper was installed on the top of the chimney and pulled closed at the fireside by a chain fed through the chimney flue, when released a large spring in the damper opened it again

I inspected a house whose fireplaces were fitted with a cast iron flue closer at the throating.

Sounds like an antique version of the chimney balloon noted above.

Unsure if this offers too great a restriction while in use.

would like to hear back from the people who got these fitted and how they are getting on with them?

I came across these at the Ploughing Championship. It looked like a neat job and easy to use. They quoted €250 to supply & install for a standard opening and €350 for a larger opening.

I got the Chimney balloon and to be honest, it all to often doesn't get put back after I've had a fire down.

I tried a similar Chimney 'cap' type thing some years ago, can't recall the exact name now, but it was installed outside on top of the chimney and there was a chain that hung down into the chimney which you pulled on to lower the cap.

It was installed fine and worked very well in terms of reducing heat loss and it was easy to release when I wanted to light a fire. Cleaning the chimney wasn't a problem either.

But the real problem came after a few days - the room stank to high heaven of a sooty chimney smell. I released up the chimney cap - smell gone in no time. Had chimney cleaned and lowered the cap again, within days not only the living room but the whole house had the same sooty smell.

In the end I had to have it taken out, credit where credit is due the company involved were excellent and gave me a full refund.

I wonder could that also happen with the one I suggested!

I was thinking of getting it installed in my house but perhaps should get them to give referrals.
