cheque stamp duty refund

I wrote acheque, but it turns out that its not required (I paid by credit card instead)

I've written CANCELLED across the cheque and stapled it into my chequebook.

If I bring this single cheque to the customer services counter of my bank will they refund me the EUR 0.15 stamp duty?

this might soud petty but money is money
 
I suspect that having written on it might cause it to be classed as having been used but no harm in asking.

They most probably will credit your account but you might find youself paying more for the transaction itself unless of course you have free banking.

And quite rightly too !
Would you really have the nerve to walk into a bank with this request ? What about the petrol it would cost you to get to a branch not to mention holding up the queue.
 
of course as the amount is only 15c I wouldn't get too excited about it, but it is at least worth trying

yes, I don't want to pay stamp duty for an instrument that I do not require
and remember it doesn't take "nerve", the bank is some some kind grandfather
who gives me presents, it is a business, and indeed a publically quoted one,
its primary goal is profit, it has no problem giving me a pittance of interest on
my deposit account, and in charging for anything it can, even with my free fees
I still have to pay for some stuff

I happen to walk past the branch every day

I wouldn't be "holding up" the queue, I'd be a genuine customer with some genuine business, that is why the customer service desk exists
 

Hope you feel better having got all that off your chest - just one small point - this is not a bank charge - it's a Government Duty - the bank is only the collecting agent. For the record, there will be no problem getting the 15c back.

MBNA keep sending me their 'credit card' cheques, drawn from an AIB account. I have asked them to stop and their said no problem, but they still come. Anyway I have about a 100+ (IEP and EUR) I have written cancelled on them all. My question is (if possible) where can I bring them to get a 'refund' of the stamp duty AIB, the Centeral bank or Revenue/Collector General .

To get a stamp duty refund you would have to return the cheques to the issuing bank. However, I doubt MBNA will oblige you with a 'refund' as they cover the cost of cheque stamp duty on their customers behalf

I had nothing to get off my chest as I said for 15c I'm not getting too excited

The only reason I wrote that long post was to address the points of the other posters

While stamp duty itself itself is not a bank charge my bank definitely treated my refund as a lodgement when I returned a IR£ chequebook after euro changeover and charged it as a manual/paper transaction.
