You need to know your usage for the 12 months and you can check this online.

Might save you a few euros!
 
I just got my gas bill and noticed that I was on the Ordinary Tariff. I am almost 100% sure that I moved to the Winter Saver tariff last year, and my bills would appear to reflect that. Anyway I rang Bord Gais and they said that with the new prices that everyone had been reverted back onto the Ordinary tariff. From looking at their online calculator, it would appear that only if your usage is under 3,330kwh for the year is it any way better to use the Ordinary tariff. Ok so we're quibbling over a couple of euros, but it is my euros not theirs...Anyone else found this?
 
I got the bill today and sure enough they've put me on the new standard tariff when I used to be on the high user tariff. Like you say most people would be better off on the Winter Saver, though you do have to stay on that tariff for 12 months which due to the lack of competition for domestic gas shouldn't be a problem!

I can understand why Bord Gais wouldn't automatically commit people to a 12 month tariff but the leaflet that came with the bill does make it seem as if they have already done the calculations and that the ordinary tariff came out best!

The difference is only about a fiver over the year but multiply that by however many domestic customers they have and it probably isn't too shabby!
 
I signed up for the High user commitment back in April (after I found out it existed!). Bord Gais moved me onto their new standard tariff for my last bill, and, using my 2006 usage as a guide (approx 18 500 units), I calculated that the standard tariff is better than the winter saver for me.

Really? My usage last year was very much the same as your at 18,382 units and the bord gais calulator which is linked at the top of this thread gave me these results :

Standard Tariff: 997.54

Winter Saver: 992.76
 
Just noticed something that might explain the difference. On their website they state that on the Winter Saver:

'in the winter period (1st December - 31st March) you will be credited €175.04 (€154.22 excluding VAT).

But in the leaflet that came with the bill they say it is €170.25 (€150 excluding VAT).

Which is it I wonder?
 
I did my figures the traditional way (on the back of an envelope!) using the info in the leaflet. Must take another look!
