Cheapest way to Cardiff

Hi, Have my tickets for HC final.. great day for Irish rugby no matter who is in it. Flights to Cardiff are crazy €400+ each. Trying to decide on an alternative route, couple of options either to fly to Luton or Nottingham ( east midalnds) airport and hire a car. Anyone ever drove to Cardiff from london or Notthingham or are there other airports to choose from.

When I looked into this around a month ago, I felt that the best (cheapest and quickest) option was to fly to Birmingham and get the train (2.5-3 hours if I recall correctly). You may have to stay overnight, which could cause problems. You could also try Bristol.

You could actually drive from Ireland (ferry), but it is long, inconvenient (timing) and unreliable (high winds etc.).
 
Why not go by sea €89 to Wales for car & one adult each way and additional adults 18 each way. See here

I would estimate total journey time to be approx 7-8 hours

Bristol is the closest airport to Cardiff after Cardiff, you can get a bus to train station then train which doesn't take long. Also London is 2 hours from Cardiff so if you were really desperate you could go there but getting to Paddington from airport might take you a bit of time. Pembroke is less than 2 hours drive from Cardiff and Holyhead is close to 4 hours but you can get direct trains from Holyhead to Cardiff or otherwise change at Crew.
 
Bristol is a relatively short trip from Cardiff - I think it was 60 minutes or so, all on Motorway apart from the bizarre country roads from the airport to Bristol itself.

Alternatively there is a bus from the airport to the train station in Bristol and trains from there to Cardiff every 30 minutes. About 90 minutes travel.

Hi Thanks everyone for your replies, I had considered Bristol but so have Ryan air as the prices to Bristol are also working out at 400Euros. The match is on Saturday 20th, and no problem with coming back on Sunday
 
Air France will get you to London City Airport for 10AM on Saturday & back on Sunday for €70. All you have to do is get yourself across London and then get the train down to Cardiff & you're sorted.

I posted my travel here on an earlier post. Costs approx 174 rtn for 2 adults and car. hoping we'll have more in the car thereby reducing the cost

I also costed the Birmingham option which worked out the same price, but for other unrelated reasons we decided to go with the ferry.
 
I was in Cardiff in 2002 for the HEC final. We stayed in Bristol which is, IMHO, a much more pleasant place to socialise in than Cardiff.

Also the Football League Championship playoff is on in the Millennium Stadium on Sunday 21 May so accommodation will be priced at a premium.

Are you sure about this. The playoff finals are normally held on the last weekend of May leading up to the bank holiday in UK

no i've head a lot of talk about using bristol as its only a short trip to cardiff by train and it will be easier to get accom there that in cardiff seeing as the football playoffs are on too.
 


Birmingham would be an option, I certainly wouldnt fly to Nottingham like someone else was talking about thats an awful long drive. Do Ryanair or Aer Lingus not go to Bristol, if so that would probably make most sense if you want to fly?
 
They do fly to Bristol, but they will charge you serious money for the priveledge.

Om sure if you put more in the car they will charge more we are, I think ( on same ferry, Stena? ) and we have 4no. at the same times yopu mention for 429e.

They have taken names that require ID so I think you will need to inform in advance for extra passengers or pay an extra over as you check in.
Or stick em in the boot!

I know that, but the cost per person will drop as the cost of the car will be split 4 ways instead of 2!
 
Last time I went to Cardiff for the HC Final V Leicester (remember the famous scrum on the line and that hand!) I got a flight to Standstead on the Friday hired a car and drove to Cardiff early Saturday morning. (about 3 to 4 hours motorway the whole way) Stayed in the car Saturday night or alternatively you could drive to the nearest accommodation (unlikely to be well outside Cardiff)

Flights should be cheap to London and car hire should be around €120. Cheapish if you can get some passengers to share cost. 1 nights accomodation in London???? 1 nights accomodation in Cardiff free (if sleeping in your car or if you get lucky!) Enjoy the match and come on Munster!
 
Fly with British Midlands to Heathrow www.flybmi.com. €150 per person flying out on Saturday morning and back on Sunday night. Train to Cardiff costs about €70 and takes less than 3 hours
