Cheapest Electricity Supplier

One lives in hope! Why should a user in a rural area pay more for the same service as someone in a town/city? It doesn't happen with phone, broadband etc.
Because the cost of running the service to those areas costs more than delivering to schemes where you can deliver to up to 1200 homes in one go. For political reasons we socialise the costs for phone, and the rural broadband scheme exists because existing providers were simply not provisioning rural areas at all due to cost.

How was that offer made? Verbally?
That's really interesting. I am coming off 33% off with SSE Airtricity in 2 weeks and the best they offered me so far is 10% off which seems poor. I have some credit with them from previous overcharging which will be whittled down next bill so I might sit it out and see what all the providers do in the next month or so.

They were emailing and messaging me telling me contract was nearly up but none of that correspondence contained any offers, if I hadn't looked up the account that day I could have missed it as it was gone again couple of days later.
Thanks for that, I don't log in to their site often, but no offer listed at the moment. Will keep an eye out before I switch.

Maybe it was because I had started a switch? You could try that and see what happens, can also cancel it within 14 days if needs be.

The network is built and has been for decades. Money for old rope springs to mind.

Do you honestly think that all the cabling and infrastructure throughout the country has been in place for decades at no cost? That's right up there with Trigger still using the same broom even after 17 new heads and 14 new handles.

I presume you've believe all those stories about the emergency crews out repairing storm damage are myths, smart meters appear and install themselves, and that wooden posts stuck in the ground last forever?

Approximately 30% of the money we all pay in our bills goes to the maintenance of the grid. It's one of the highest rates in Europe due to the dispersed nature of the Irish population.

Will the Standing Charge be coming down now also? Mine has increased 67% since mid-2020, well above the CPI in the same period.

It requires considerable levels of maintenance and repair. This is per meter or km as the case may be so greater distances between properties and less than optimal interconnections means considerably more costs.

I'd love to know how they select certain customers for the big discounts !

We use about 7000 kwh per year, so heavy users as national average is 4,000 kwh/ year, no arrears and bills paid by DD and yet the best discount they offered me to retain my business was 8%!

I've just switched to SSE Airtricity and will check my Bord Gais account over the next 14 days cooling off period to see will a big discount offer appear on my account.

I don't know, I would be a fairly light user as in I have cut back anything that could be cut back and got my bill down a lot in past year so it's certainly not based on using a lot of units!

Flogas getting huge publicity for their 30% cut.

Pity the journalists don't check their rates. Even after the 30% cut they will be more expensive than electric Ireland's current pre rate cut unit price and with very high standing charge.

Best ignored

It does heap the pressure on BGE who haven't made any move yet. However a bit like AIB mortgage rates circa 2015 some customers are still on better deals with BGE even with all the other supplier's cuts.

Flogas Current unit rate is 62.27c incl. vat and their s/c is €368.69 so that comes down to 43.59c and €258.08 respectively. Assuming it is a straight 30% cut across the top.

Well you can get this is you have a smart meter - it's a standard rate so presumably the 30% will also apply. There is a fixed smart rate too but no point signing onto that before the change in price on November 1.

Im with BG Dual Fuel Smart Meter.
Currently offering me a 20% discount to continue although the standard rates on offer appear to be higher than the rates on my last bill (before discount). Current discount is 15%

I am on a smart plan with free electricity on Saturdays 9-5. Appears there is in fact a standard rate increase with BG but hiding it behind a discount?

I got my usage down to around 200kw per month. The house I bought has a mixture of electric storage heaters and panel heaters but most of them are broken. I got the chimney repaired and a wood stove installed, and that eliminated the need to use the 2 working panel heaters.

That is fairly low, my last bill was 276kw for two month bill but that is with serious economising and in summer! If I want to do a bit of baking or whatever it fairly climbs! I also have a radon fan that uses 1kw per day so can't get rid of that cost!
