Cheap wedding transport

Hi
I will be geting married next year and am shocked at the cost of car hire

It will be a traditional wedding - Everything is located very close - my house , the church and the hotel - We have been quoted 500 euro for car hire for the bride & groom on the day even though it will be a short journey - Are there any alternatives to these wedding car hire places ...
We are trying to see if any friends have a good car that we could use too ...

I'm pretty sure that the cost has nothing to do with the distance. You are hiring the car and driver for the day, regardless of how far the car has to go.

i would definitely try to borrow a car. You must know someone with a nice
car who would be pleased to drive you, as a wedding gift.

You could rent (as in normal car hire) something flash for the day for yourselves and have a friend drive you there and back.

If you book a driver for the day then expect to pay a lot of money no matter how far he/she has to drive you. They still have to set aside a good few hours of the day.

Think I prefer that option as will not be a problem getting someone to drive us to the church and then hotel - Makes more sense ...Will have to look into costs of hiring a good car for a day or two

I am from family of six girls and all are married anything from 35years to 22 years and none of use a hired car for our weddings. We used the best car we had within the family circle. I can say there was not a brand new car among the lot. Now a days when most people have fairly new cars and some very flash cars and they then go our and spend a fortune on wedding car hire for their wedding day. "Like Michael Flately"

Hehe, not exactly helping the OP, but seemed relevant none the less.

Recently had a wedding party pass me (in Cork) with the whole convoy in old style white mini's! Looked brilliant. Doesn't always have to be the biggest or the flashest car, just something that makes you happy.

I was told by friends that in France they rent a high end car (ferrari, zonda, etc) and it becomes part of the photos! it may cost a similar amount to the hire car, but its a bit more unique!
The only thing is who gets to drive there ;-)
Just remember only a few people spot the car you are in, I know a few brides who insisted on gettign photos taken in the car as it was so costly!

I agree - it is mainly for the photos - I already have my sister's husband who will use his car - 1 year old mazda 6 to drive the bridesmaids

As you say it is only a small amount of people who spot the car as most should be in the church already at that stage .... I really can't justify spending 500 euro for the 2 mile drive to the church and another 3/4 miles from the church to the hotel - I'd prefer to spend on the reception drinks!!

a couple of options you might want to try checkout who else in the family has a decent car that can be used, if they are prepared to let you borrow it arrange a nice valet the day before so its sparkling, that way you'll both be happy!
Check out a few hire car companies, see if you can rent a high spec merc/bmw, and then truss up a friend / relative into a suit to chauffeur you!
When if comes to your wedding, not just the car, see what discounts you can get.... develop a brass neck... I managed to get 20% off the wine, a better menu for the price of a cheaper menu, discount on a car....
It helped that I got married in january, but really ask every supplier for some sort of discount / additional service.
People won't remember the car / favours / chocolate fountain / bagpiper... but they do remember the wine with the meal!
Spend it where it matteres, its darn easy to flitter money when arranging a wedding!

Maybe you could hire from outside your area. Around the mid-West, it'll cost you about Eur 350.

We paid €350 in Cork too. Shop around. I priced local Funeral Directors who were charging €600 for the same car!

When we got married a few years ago, we took a walk down to Jury's Hotel car park, picked out the best black Merc, talked (interviewed!) the the driver and did a deal. It worked out great! The taxi arrived in pristine condition, the driver was all dickied up for the day and it was also a great laugh amongst us and our friends. Would it work now? Probably!

Know this wouldn't appeal to everyone but was quite a posh wedding in the village i live in and the groom and his three companions arrived on a trailed on the back of a tractor. All sitting around on bales of hay in their wedding outfits - hilarious and just something you'd never forget.
