Cheap reliable inkjet to run

My Canon Pixma MP160 multifunction printer gave up the ghost after
a year. It's not worth getting fixed. Some common mode of failure involving
a faulty paper jam feed detector.

Anyway... One plan is that I will purchase a Samsung mono laser as my
heavy duty printer (probably a multifunction one) and I will also buy an
inkjet so that kids can print out colour stuff for projects, etc.
I am looking for advice on which inkjets are lowest cost to run in terms
of colour inks (and possibly non-OEM refills) yet reliable.

I've heard various recommendations , Epson (supposed to be cheaper inks),
HP (supposed to be reliable and cheap inks.. although I'm not convinced)

Any advice ?

My other option is getting a color laser and just ditch inkjets altogether.
My experience with inkjets hasn't been that great to be honest.

Have had no problems whatsoever with my HP 3820 inkjet for the last 5 years. Print about 40 - 50 sheets a day - so that's nearly 60,000 pages without a hiccup. Inks reasonable. Don't think they make this exact model anymore so you could maybe enquire about it's nearest equivalent.

Yes - I've certainly heard HP inkjets are known for reliability.
Do you use OEM or refills for replacement ink ?
What roughly is the cost of replacing all the ink ?

I always use OEMs after a couple of bad experiences with refills.

Black & 3 colour cartridges for the 3820 are around €25 each I think.
It uses HP no.s 78 & 15.
