Cheap carpet-good/bad idea?

Im gettin carpet delivered from Carpet Right this saturday coming. My budget was around €500 for the two bedrooms. I thought this was loads..how wrong was i? Anyway..i literally ordered the cheapest there €9.99/sqm ..bringing the total up to €440. Ive two questions! The carpet i bought does not require underlay..the sales guy said the backing on the carpet does not require it..its still very thin though! Is this a mistake not getting underlay? Secondly, theres cork tiles on the floor at the moment..glued down. Do i need to lift them or can they lay the carpet on top? Any replies would be great!
 

Don't think you can lay carpet over cork tiles.

We got a cheap carpet in one of our rooms - the rest of the house is laminate/solid or tiled. There was no underlay with our carpet either and whilst it's a bit firm underfoot, it's fine.

With 6 nieces/nephews under 7 years old, we have found that the main advantage to cheap carpet is that it can be quite hard wearing and easy to clean.

Yes it would be - your carpet won't wear as well without the underlay.
Would I be worried about it being a "cheap" carpet - not really as a bedroom does not need to withstand tons of traffic - like a hall does - where really a good carpet is really required..

Secondly, theres cork tiles on the floor at the moment..glued down.

Contact the shop - you may not have to but to be on the safe side talk tto someone in the shop who knows what they are talking about. If you do have to raise the buy a wall paper steamer - thats what I used to raise them..
 
swordshead, i'd be with pinky on this -we have carpet in 2 bedrooms with no underlay and it is really not wearing well at all - worth the small extra investment imho
 
I would not buy from the mentioned shop unless you like plastic carpet! You should go for as much wool content as you can afford. The more wool the better your carpet will last. They do have some wool content carpets but if you shop around you will find 80% wool carpets for cheaper!
 
There's no doubt that carpets with high wool content look better & are more luxurious than synthetic and in general they'll last longer.

Worth noting though, especially if there are kids around, that wool carpets stain much more easily than synthetic. In addition, many synthetic carpets have built-in resistance to water and mildew - many wool carpets don't.
 
Would never put down cheap carpet again. Bought first house about 7/8 years ago. No money. Put cheap carpet through the house. Think it was IR£10 per yrd. The sitting room and hall had to be torn up within the year and within two years I ended up ripping up the bedrooms too.

It was that kind of crochet interwound stuff (for want of a better word) that you see in Carpet Right. I had the underlay under it, and even then, it was like a rag on the floor. If something spilled on it, rather than wiping off, it rubbed in like a black mark. It drove me round the twist.

It was a pure false economy for me and I ended up putting down cheap laminate €7.99 per yrd in the bedrooms which looked miles better and more hardwearing.
 
Most shops sell standard "bedroom carpet" which has a foam backing and is meant for light use.

We used it in the bedrooms and it lasts years. It does not have the bounce and padding of a wool carpet with underlay but is fine for bedroom use when all you really want is something warm underfoot.

I wouldent use it in general areas though as it feels cheap to walk on and would not wear well.

The stuff that i bought has what i can only describe as a very light felt type backing on it..no foam! It was on one of the massive rolls at the back of the shop! I had no idea carpet was so expensive..hence my budget was so small...ah itll have to do its coming on sat..i have no kids or major people traffic (apart from drunken mates on a sat nite ) so should last for a few years anyway!
Oh..rang the shop..yes seemingly they can lay it directly onto the cork tiles!
 
We are probably fortunate in where we live here in England as we have a carpet manufacturer within 10 miles where we buy carpets at much less than normal shop prices. Just as well given the frequency with which the better half likes to redecorate!
 
Could be a way to make your fortune Sanjay if you can find a way to import the carpet cheaply and offer a job to the guy that lays it!!!

I agree. The OP's 2007 carpet may well be in tatters at this stage too!
