Charity donations online

My son recently completed a sponsored run in aid of the maternity unit at his local hospital in Salisbury, raising, up to now, in excess of £2000.

The site, www.justgiving.co.uk makes use of a facility over here called GiftAid, whereby the charity of your choice can claim back the tax on your donation, assuming of course that you are a UK taxpayer.

Just out of interest do you have anything like that in Ireland; either the website or the GiftAid system?

If you are PAYE employed, you can give your PRSI number to the charity and they can claim back the tax themselves.

If you are self-employed, once you get a receipt you can claim back the tax yourself (so you can give more than you might otherwise).

You need to make a minimum donation of €250 to the charity over the course of the tax year.

See [broken link removed] for Bothar, for example.

The charity needs to be a registered charity.
