charge for old bank statments?

I have just put down the phone to UB in shock.
I was requesting copies of old bank statements and they wanted
to charge me €3.81 for the first sheet and €2.54 for each subsequent sheet.
As I need 4 old statments (usually 5/6/7 sheets long) this was going to cost me €60 or more.
He asked if I had never received them and being the honest person I am - I said they I had probably just misplaced them.
Should I have just said I must never have got them as my filing skills are second to none.
Is this a standard cost banks charge?

I don't know of any banks that don't charge for duplicate statements.

Any reason why you need copies and can't use internet banking to print off transactions?

fair enough!

statements go back to 2004/2005 so cant access on-line

thanks though

probably completely off the wall but could you make a freedom of information request to a bank and expect to receive all your statement information. Is the charge for such an FOI request limited if it is even possible?

[broken link removed]applies to Public Bodies (e.g. State Agencies, Government Departments), not to banks, corporates etc. The Data Protection Legislation wouldn't be applicable here either.

The charges seem excessive to me.

Previous discussion on the cost of bank statements here and here.

The statements have to be manually printed from michofiche by a bank official. The process takes time and the charge reflects this.

My advice to people in this regard:

Staple a €5 (formerly £5) note to each bank statement and it is highly unlikely that you will misplace them.
