Cause for celebration - Cancelled Eircom

I cancelled my eircom landline today and wanted to share my joy.

I have NTL broadband and recently discovered the joy of using VOIP for my phone calls. Great savings, where I used to pay 60 - 70 euros a month to eircom I will now pay about 10 to Blueface (there are plenty of other VOIP providers out there so look around). Obviously I also pay 35 to NTL for the broadband but I had that before anyway. I kept my old number and all my calls within Ireland are free for the first 6 months.

Check it out if you want to bet the rip off telecos.

Congrats.

However, today for the first time in a very long time I actually had cause to thank Eircom - rang customer support after our broadband connection stopped working after a power cut - no waiting for an operator, and problem solved in under 3mins. I'm amazed!

You were lucky. Did they tell you to switch the modem off then back on again?

I cancelled all eircom services (except line rental) a good while ago but I still get the sales calls. Apparently they want me back. They assured me several times that I'd be taken off the "list" whatever that is.

Having switched from eircom it seems strange to be now dealing with a company (blueface) that seems to like its customers!

With the spread of VOIP I wonder how much loger they will be able to keep billing people for line rental - though I'm sure they'll die trying.

They will surely keep billing you for line rental as long as you keep the line.

Can you make emergency calls using Blueface? (112) Could be worthwhile confirming this now so you don't rely on it in an emergency.

You can't but my mobile does.

Dublinboy - do you still have to keep the line - surely you would have to pay rental in that case?

I didn't have to keep the line because I use NTL for my broadband connection.

I've done the exact same recently and endorese everything dublin boy says. Of course not many people have broadband without an eircom line, so it only applies to NTL, Chorus, IBB and other wireless operators.

I thought you had to cancel eircom but once I ported (i.e. changed my old nmber to blueface) I got a final bill from eircom and they actually owed me something.

I hear Blueface advertsing on Newstalk 106 so obviously expanding.
