A few questions

catalytic converter in a starlet
1. what is it?
2. what does it do?
3. where is it?
4. do i have one on a 1990 starlet (90-96model)?
5. if i dont have one can i put one in?

thanks

1. Its basically a device which treats the exhaust fumes before they leave the car and removes a lot of the pollution.

Catalytic converters are the materials that catalyse the conversion of the exhaust emissions from cars into less harmful produces. These catalytic converters reduce carbon monoxide emissions and can also reduce the discharge of soot, smoke and nitrogen oxides. A catalytic converter can only work with lead free petrol, as lead prevents metals in the catalyst from working properly

2. As above

3. Usually located between exhaust manifold centre box on the exhaust system. Lambda sensors (O2 sensors) are usually hooked up to them.

4. as far as i know they dont have them. And dont need them by law as the law only applies to newer cars, after 1993 i think.

5. You can get one fitted if you wish to

This is what they look like

i got a quote from a VW garage for replacing my cat converter and lambda sensore for €980...i chk with a exhaust specialist but unfortunatley those parts is not availbale for my 02 vw polo.
looks like i will be working 2 weeks for nothing..

folks this cat converter shouldn't really cost that much but beware those main dealer will ripped ur head off ....because those parts may be hard to find..try otto.ie or micksgarage....they can help..and ssave moeny big big time

FOLKS/Expert..

can anyone justify if its really that expensive for an OEM VW Cat converter? 650 euro for the parts?
its only for a VW polo 2002??

Cats are very expensive.

They contain some rare and exotic ingedients.

There made from stainless steel and look like a honeycomb inside the part. The honeycombs are coated with platinum and rhodium which is what makes the part expensive. The platinum and rhodium act as a catalyst causing the hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide pollutants to convert to harmless water and carbon dioxide.

thx mate.obviously the exhaust got damaged as easy as crossing a speed ramp.or a obstacle on the road.didn't know until later..in fact too late.damaged done to cat converter.
