My wife was seriously ill in 2006 and I received Carer's benefit for 13 weeks and a respite grant of approx. 1200 euro. Are these taxable? I can't seem to find it listed anywhere and I'm about to do my tax return. Would appreciate guidance from anyone that has experience of this issue.

Like most benefits Carer's Benefit is assessable for tax but not taxed at source. See here:
Taxation

Your weekly Carer's Benefit is considered as income for tax purposes. The payment is not taxed before you get it, so you should include it when settling your tax affairs directly with Revenue. If you have any questions about income tax, contact your local tax office.
Not sure about the Respite Care Grant.

Many thanks Clubman. Suspected the worst. Will have to balance medical costs against the liability and await what they say about the respite grant element.
