in the coming decades ireland and europe and america will lose many jobs to india china etc,i have a degree in accountancy and finance and am considering working in fund accounting but i have read that even these jobs are being moved to india,many of the big banks like jp morgan have been recruiting in india as labour costs for graduates are 80% lower there.many IT software engineering and numerous other graduate jobs will be at risk of offshoring in coming decades.what careers in ireland will be safer in this regard?? i have a few ideas and am considering doing further education in a different field.and what will irish economy be like when many of the multinationals leave? we cant compete on price anymore and we are not brilliant on "adding value" compared to many other nations.the favourable tax regime is keeping the big firms here but they will leave eventually.
 
I say try to get something suitable in the Public Sector!! The pay is on a par, if not above the Private sector in a number of areas!

There is good holidays, pension, and they in general try to provide a 'family friendly' work environment, with Term Time, and allowing Parental Leave to be taken as a day a week rather than a block etc....
 
We took the jobs from what were higher cost economies. Now we are a high cost economy and they are going South (or East) again. What comes around goes around as they say.
 
These kind of macro economic discussions can get a bit depressing (we're all doomed!!!), but doesn't necessarily transfer to the individual. 10,000 jobs created/lost, so what? I only need one.

I would argue you're better off working where your talents & pasions lie, even if its not the most profitable sector. Chances are you'll be happier & will get on better anyway.

With that caveat in mind, I would see anything that is tied to location (i.e. can't be physically moved easily) or anything related to an aging population as a good area.
- Healthcare would be the sweet spot between the two.
- general services like legal, accounting, consulting (knowledge based jobs?)
- construction & trades. Very cyclical unfortunately.
 
Leisure and recreation. Lots of people with not enough work are going to have lots of time on their hands and are going to need to be amused.

Fair bump;) ...

I dont agree... From my experience, my girlfriends dad is a IT consultant, left the North to take up a 6 month contract in Shannon, was there 7 years, and recently was relieved of duty due outsourcing the work to India. Of his 14 or so work mates, the all found work within a month. That was a year and a half ago. Two months ago the company called them all back saying it didnt work out for them. Just one example...
 
How about following a career in politics and becoming a TD? These 'jobs' will never be outsourced.
