I used my laser card in a known petrol station yesterday. However, when I check my banking on-line I noticed there were SIX other transactions for the same date. I've cancelled my card and contacted the head office of the station where they told me that they're bank wasn't up to date and the other transactions on my account are from previous times when I had used the station???? Any suggestions or advice on what I can do would be grately appreciated!

Did you make 6 other purchases at the same place? Did they not appear on you card/account prior to this? If the answer to both questions is "yes" then surely the likelyhood of this being a scam are extremely slim?

I have made previous purchases in this station and I assume that with laser transactions would come off my account within 24 hours at least?

Im afraid this does happen. I have been caught with laser transactions being taken months and months later so now i keep all my reciepts and only get rid of them when the transaction is posted to my account. What a horrible way for you to have to find this out though...

Some companies can take months to process transactions, e.g. Aer Lingus from onboard sales using credit cards, I don't know what the story is with Laser cards.

Will she be hit with another annual stamp duty charge of €20 for the new card assuming it's a combined ATM/Laser card?

[broken link removed]

Does the stamp duty charge really apply to re-issues or replacements of existing cards? I thought it applied to card accounts not the physical cards themselves?

Not sure - the summary is vague:
Stamp Duties are levied on financial cards and credit card accounts.
For example, as far as I know, two CCs on one account are only charged one €40 but two ATM/Laser cards on the one account are charged €20 each. However I don't know if reissues/replacements after a card cancellation are charged a second time.

I couldn't imagine that replacement cards are subject to this tax. It just wouldn't make sense and would incentivise people not to cancel cards even if they have doubts over security breaches etc.

I don't remember either being hit for extra stamp duty when the bank replaced my credit & laser cards with chip & pin versions a few years back.

Sorry - I should have read on...
What if my card is lost or stolen?

If your card is lost or stolen you are not liable for stamp duty on the replacement card
I presume that this also applies to cancellations of possibly compromised cards?

Thanks for clarifying that.

ps It might be worth editing the above discussion (perhaps removing my posts & maybe others) in order to avoid any unnecessary confusion.
