I have got the job of getting my brother's car "sorted" for NCT adn roadworthiness. The car has been lying unused fro about a year. What I need to know is what to watch out for in putting it back on raod. I suppose new battery/battery charge, coolant/oil change, etc.. are givens but what about brake lines, etc.? anything else to watch out for in a laid-up car?

If the car has been parked with handbrake on (ideally, shouldn't have been) discs may be problematic.

The following is advice from honestjohn in storing a car for 3 months or more - obviously too late to apply the advice but it may help in what to look out for:

Does it not make sense to disconnect the battery completly if leaving a car unused for a few months? If so would I disconnect both terminals?

Not sure about that - most advice I've seen suggests a trickle charger. It may be if you disconnect completely over a longer time period you could lose settings, ECU needs to "relearn", minor electrical problems, immobilser etc.
