Looks like 15 days is the minimum, I received mine recently and it was a full month before renewal.

Renewing your motor insurance

Under Non-Life Insurance (Provision of Information) (Renewal of Policy of Insurance) Regulations 2007 (SI No. 74/2007) your motor insurance company must issue your insurance renewal notice not less than 15 working days before the date of expiry of your insurance policy………………

Do they have to issue in paper format? I remember a recent discussion on radio about an accident that happened and the insurance was found to be out by several weeks. The insurance company had issued renewal by email but I think got a character wrong in the email so it was never received. They actually paid up anyway whether or not that was the bad publicity or because they were wrong by not sending it out in post I don't know.

I don’t know, the SI doesn’t say paper format, it says at 5 (1) – (A) & (B) ‘’In Writing’’ Isn’t an eMail ‘’In Writing’’, I would guess the eMail is sufficient.

They could get a character wrong in a postal address too, 6 instead of 61 etc and the renewal notice might not arrive at its intended destination.

I don’t think a judge in a no insurance prosecution would accept the argument ‘’I never received the renewal notice argument’’ I always thought it was up to the policy holder to ensure they have cover in place.
