Car Dealer v Private Car owner

I'm new to Dublin and looking to purchase a new car. I have been advised by a friend that it is best to purchase a car through a dealer to avoid any dodgy dealings.
Can anybody shed any light on this?

Hi LeeH and welcome to AAM.
Now, as far as I know the only way to buy a new car IS through a dealer.

Now maybe you meant a used car, but "new" to you and if so then there are arguments on both sides, but whichever you choose it is imperative that you have the car checked out by a competent mechanic.
 
I assume he means second hand new to him car.

To cheap to be true isn't true.
Although lets face it most people ads are genuine.

Ask around friends and family.
Just be careful bring a friend or a mechanic as a second pair of eyes.

Make sure if you are buying private the price reflects that ie no warranty no comeback.
