Hi I was wondering if anyone could help. Got a new battery fitted last week.(Bought new from shop). Worked perfect. Tried to start it this morning and there isnt a geek when i turn the key. If I turn the key once the radio/cd will play but turn the extra notch to start the engine and nothing. Wonder is it the actual starter?

From your description - I'd say you need a new starter motor. Doesn't sound like the alternator as you say you can still play the stereo. I'm in Munster too - I can give you the names of a few reasonably priced garages if you'd like to PM me.

get the alternator tested by specialist company.
usually the test is free_can say youll come back next week
if they confirm that the alternator needs replacing get it fixed for their price or go to a scrapyard and get a cheap replacement alternator
sometimes its hard to know with the alternator
i drove a car for a year with battery dying and garages said that alternator was ok and it was not until i went to a specialist place where they got the special test equipment that diagnosed the problem
then again it could be the starter

I can jump start it in second gear, does that shine any light on whether its the alternator or starter motor?

It could be the connector on the battery, I had a similar problem lately when I changed my battery. If the battery has been sitting in the shop for a while the connector starts to oxidise. What you do is remove the cover from the connector and get some steel wool and shine the connector to remove the oxidised covering. Connect it up again and give it a go.

Did the car start ok when the new battery was put in?

If you turn on the full beams are they good and strong?

As was mention pull the connectors off the new battery and clean them up. A kettle of hot water or some sand paper.

Make sure the connectors are on good and tight not just shoved on loosely.

Hopefully something simple.

Could be a loose wire on the starter. I had problem with the earth wire coming loose every so often in my car. Check the wires on the starter to make sure they are not loose.
The radio may work with a weak battery so as above check the full beam lights. If they are weak then you have an faulty alternator. As you said at the start, it worked perfectly but then not in the morning..........I would be thinking alternetor.

From my limited experience
1. turn the key no motion lights on dash dim and you hear a click
Then its a loose connection on the battery
2. turn the key no motion lights on dash stay bright but no motion from the starter motor then loose connection to starter or starter gone. try hitting starter with handle of hammer

I had a similar problem, changed the battery and still wasnt working right. After a while it settled down and started to work fine, even though the garage said the batt was fully charged. i was only doing short runs which probably didnt help either.
