Cant access Windows updates

I have my PC firewalled by Zone Alarm Pro, also I have Avast running and do Ad-Aware scans once a week so I dont suspect I have a virus.
Over three months now my PC wont accept Windows updates as it says "My PC is in an unstable condition, uninstall XP etc..
I dont want to uninstall XP as I might lose some files and not be able to run it properly again, as it tels me when I go to uninstall XP..??
Any suggestions?? Thanks
 
Put in the XP cd and try running the fix installation (or wording to that effect) option
