Hi, My sisters neighbour has builders in who are putting a cannopy over the windows of the front of their house.

The builders are cutting into the roof to do this.

Does anyone know if planning permission is required to alter the front of a bungalow?
Its going across the whole front of the house.
Its a permanant type cannopy, not a screw to the wall type.
Thanks

Re: Cannopy at front of house.planning required?

Unfortunately this isa grey area and is open to subjetive opinion. The canopy may not require planning permisison so long as it does not "materially affect the external appearance of structure so as to render it inconsistent with the character of the structure or neighbouring structures."

Any two people or planners will disagree on the extent to which changes will be considered material. Again, the character of any building is open to interpretation.

So, it really depends on how much the appearance of the building is changed by the canopy.
