We were meant to close on Monday but our solicitor cannot get in contact with the vendor's solicitor to get a closing date. Apparently he is in meetings - 24 hours a day! Any suggestions?
send email and cc yourself for proof of contact and also tell secretary that u will hold until meeting is over

Perhaps you should try to contact the vendors solicitor yourself to speed things up!
Use a phone with hands-free & conference calling facility - Tell the solicitor's secretary that you are going to hold on the line until he gets free. You don't mind how long it takes. When you get him, conference in your own solicitor and let the two of them take it from there.
I would second the contacting the estate agent route. The sooner you close, the sooner the estate agent gets paid. They will be on the ball I'm sure.
If that fails, & you are buying a newly constructed home from a construction firm - fax the construction firm with your problem. I've found this worked well for me in the past
