Cancelled purchase of electrical item and am now looking for refund.

I recently paid fully whack for a large kitchen appliance in a discount store and paid for delivery also. When I got home (and did a bit of research), I discovered that the brand and type of goods I had bought were notoriously troublesome. I phoned the store the next day and said I did not want to take the item for reason stated. They tried to convince me otherwise but I stuck to my guns and told them I was not going to take it. I said I might look at upgrading to a more expensive product. I have now decided I don't want to buy from this store at all, but they are being cagey about even talking about giving me my money back. They keep saying we'll see or we'll talk about again. Or they will hold a more expensive item for me until I can afford it. Feel really stupid and panicked. Any advice? I'm pg at the moment and could do without the stress.

Re: Think I'm in Trouble

In the terms and conditions it should tell you if you can cancel and under what conditions. Sometimes theres a restocking fee, or an admin fee.

Re: Think I'm in Trouble

A bit surprised that it hasn't been delivered yet. How did you pay for the item ??

Re: Think I'm in Trouble

I paid in full by CC. Inc. delivery. There were no terms and conditions, only a piece of paper stating name of product and how much I paid. I called next day to cancel the item, so there was no delivery made. They have had my money for nearly a month.

Re: Think I'm in Trouble

You're basically at the mercy of the the store in question here. Essentially, you can't return an item because you don't like it - or you decide that you don't want it. The basics of consumer legislation are repair, replace or refund (normally in that order based on the way retailers operate). They're not obliged to give you a refund in the situation you describe - and this isn't complicated or mitigated by the fact the item hasn't been delivered. You've still purchased the item. The best you can do is reason with the store as best you can to see if there's some compromise that suits you both (within the bounds of what they're prepared to offer).

Re: Think I'm in Trouble

The store are not obliged to refund your money as all that's happened is you've changed your mind. As a gesture of goodwill they may do, but as it's a "discount store" this may be unlikely.

What do your bank have to say about this payment and the possibility of getting a refund?
There wasn't anything fraudulent here, so there shouldn't be any dispute with the payment.

If the bank did do a chargeback, the shop would be lumbered with all the transaction fees, through no fault of their own.

So I guess I am in trouble. Well that will teach me I suppose. Had a chat with dh last night though and he said the main thing is not to get too upset and make an arrangement with them. I live and learn!. Thanks guys.

Go into the store and talk to them in person. Say that it is your own fault and ask what they can do to help you out. You should be able to buy another brand but there is no point in getting their backs up. I find that the personal, friendly approach almost always works.

That's what I'm going to do Diziet. I reckon there's no way they will do a refund for me or they would have gone some way towards that at this stage. So ultimately I am going to end up with a brand I am happy with, but not the model I want, at a higher price than I wanted to pay and a reduced repairs warranty. But that will teach me not to act impulsively in similar situation again. But at least I'm not stressing out over the d*mn thing any more.
