Cancel membership, no refund

We have 6 months of gym membership left and we would like to cancell as they were unwilling to frieeze our membership and get the balance returned but we were told that we are not entitled to a refund, is this not illegal..i have looked at the consumer association website but can't see anything concrete that i can come back to them with and demand a refund for the 6 months we are not going to use. we were never informed that if you cancel you are not intitled to a refund.
Are they within there rights?

Did you sign a contract? In my experience you are tied into most gym memberships for 12 months.

If you did have any sort of contract or agreement the T&Cs on this would be the first place to check.

Were there terms and conditions relating to cancelations in the contract you presumably signed when joining? I wouldn't be surprised if they included a clause to cover the above. Don't think there's anything illegal about doing this.
 
we can't find any T&C attached. They are totally inflexible, we initially wanted a freeze for a few months
 
Will normally only allow a freeze in membership on the production of a medical letter stating that the member is unfit (healthwise) at that particular time to use the jim.
 
I wouldn't be expecting a refund, gyms make money out of annual contracts with probably half the people only going regularly for a few months. However most gyms, or so I thought, allow you to freeze your membership. Mine charges €20 to freeze for up to 6 mths.

May be fine you are a female... is it "particular time to use the jeanne" for males?
 
Check out the http://consumerconnect.ie website for details of the deal they negotiated with Ben Dunne recently to remove unfair clauses from the membership contracts at those gyms - Might be worth talking to them for further advice.
