My mother bought 2 weeks time share 7 years ago and now does not want it.

She used it every year for the past 7 years and now wants rid of it.

If she just stops paying the maintenance fees will this be enough?

She bought it off friends when she was more active so she is not worried about losing money.

She only paid €1000 for each week and now just wants rid of it.

What should she do she is afraid if she just stops paying she will incur other fees.

The property is costing her €550 for two weeks every year.

Re: TimeShare Canary Islands

My mother is 85 and bought there as she knew the same people would be there every year at the same time.

She used to visit the people she bought it off for the past 20 year. So it suited her to go back to the same place.

I don't know if anyone can help you without seeing whatever contract she signed at the time of purchase.

She didnt sign any contract she just gave her friends money and took over the payments with the timeshare company every year

If she doesn't have any contract, then I guess if she stops paying, the timeshare company will start chasing her friends. Did she have any agreement with the friends as to whether this was a permanent or temporary arrangement?

I would imagine the first port of call would be to the timeshare company, who i assume still sell timeshare who would either take it off her hands or buy it from her and would then sell it on, or advertise it in the reception where the appartment is, or a local auctioneer in the resort.

I don't own timeshare but have stayed in timeshare operated resorts in portugal a number of times and people are always trying to sell it so there must be plenty of buying and selling still going on.

As it would still be in other people's name I would presume the time-share company shouldn't even discuss it with the op's parents.

The people she bought it off did register her as the new owners of these 2 weeks and she does pay the company directly RCI is the company. The whole thing is a bit of a mess,She thought it was a good idea at the time and she did enjoy her holidays there every year up to now but she is not sure if she wants to continue going there.Just to give readers a laugh she wants to go on a cruise next year as she finds "the timeshare resort has got a little boring!!!"

If I was her I would just forget all about it and stop paying. She could tell the people if she wants but at todays rates thats still an expensive holiday, she wont be able to sell it on.
