Can you put tiles on old tiles?

It's all take, take, take with me, but the advice here is solid and practical so thanks in advance.

I have an en suite toilet. The tiles we put down are either porous or just stain easily (bad aim!). Either the tiles go or I do. The existing tiles are about 10"x10". We want to put down mosaic tiles which come on a webbed backing (about 12"x12" per sheet).

Is it possible to lay tiles on existing ones? They are on an upstairs floor which is just thick plywood.

I just did the very thng you asked last week, tiled over origional floor tiles and the turned out great. Its vital there are no loose tiles. Saves a lot of time and mess.

Exellent.
Do I just use regular tiling stuff or need to do any special prep?

The only problem we found with putting tiles over existing floor tiles was the height was raised a little too high above the saddle board and it could be dangerous.

There are some previous threads about tiling over tiles.

We tiled over tiles on the wall very successfully.
However, you seem to be talking about mosiac floor tiles which are a bit more specialist.

I am no expert, but would they not need a very flat surface ?

We did this last year on the advice of our tiler. He said we'd be mad to try and lift the floor tiles that were there. We tried to lift one anyway and he was right - there were almost an inch thick and welded to the ground. Anyway he did it successfully.

As sueellen said, be careful with your saddle boards - we had the additonal height available so it wasnt an issue.

Can you elaborate please? Should I just leave it to the tiler? He hummed and hawed a bit when I floated this idea with him but he does great work.

Evo-stick flexible floor tile adhesive. Get it from any builders merchants (a lot cheaper than the tile shops). It's like normal tile cement with elastomers or something added so it's less likely to crack.

I used it in my guest WC tiling over tiles - no problems.

You'd have to use it anyway if tiling on an upstairs floor.

If you are using a professional tiler then he will probably use this.

Good stuff guys, thanks for the tips. The saddle height is no problem as I raised this to accomodate the wodden floor we put down in the bedroom.
