Can we both claim JB

I have been claiming Jobseekers benefit for the last few months and my partner has just been laid off. Can my partner also claim JB (he has enough PRSI contributions) so he will also get 204.30 a week, or does he have to go on mine as a qualifying adult ?

If your partner has enough PRSI contributions he can get JB in his own right regardless of your circumstances. You can each get 204.30 a week

Thank you for your reply. If we both get JB do we also get a qualifying child and mortgage supplement (something which I have not previously applied for) ?

The Qualified Child Payment (currently 26 euro per week) would be divided between you - you would each get 13 euro.

Mortgage Interest Supplement is means-tested, so isn't an automatic entitlement. You can get the application forms from the CWO at the local health centre.

Thanks. I have read on the citizens info website we would get our interest paid less 18e - is this not the case ? Our only income would be 2 x JB plus one qualifying child.

No, you would also have to pay the difference between your income (JB x 2 + 1 child = 434.60) and the Supplementary Welfare Allowance rate for your family size (2 adults + 1 child = 365.90).

So you would be required to pay 86.70 per week. If the weekly interest was less than this amount, you would not qualify for the supplement.

The calculation above assumes you have no assessable savings or property (other than your own home).

Gosh, that means for my 800e mortgage per month i may only get about 20e a week help. this seems unmanageable - when you add on car ins, house ins, life ins, tv lic, bins, esb - all neccesities. better hope we find work soon else we will be going under and losing our house . . . . .
