can I use generic ink cartridges with lexmark x5495

Recently purchased a Lexmark x5495 printer, the cartridges in it were single use, i purchased an generic black cartridge, the printer does not seem to work, is there any issues with this printer and generic cartridges?

I think the problem would be with the "generic ink cartridge" rather than with the printer itself. A common problem, if not resolved by purchasing by Lexmark inks then you should return the printer whilst its still within the manufacturers warranty.
