Can I scan headers of a file to find out what file-type it is?

Hi, I downloaded a programme from torrent and went to run it but it wont. So i opened the file with the emule plugin called "media info", and it told me it recognised a MPEG-1 Layer-3 audio stream so i assumed i downloaded a video. but after trying all possible video extentions it wont open.??
So then i assumed it is a bogus/corrupt file (odd for a bogus file to be 443MB, yes?) and before i delete it, i just wanted to know, can i scan it with something like a "header scan" just to see if that works? or something like that.

Thanks!

MPEG-1 Layer-3 is the full name for MP3... which would make it an audio file...

Of course lots of video formats contain an MP3 track...
