I know im probably onto a loser here but this is a last gasp attempt to see if there is anything i can do to reclaim my stamp duty. €11,000 paid in June/July 06 just months before it was eventually abolished!!... whilst i tend to try forget about it and deal with it my girlfriend brings it up regularly and it tends to lead to arguments and frustration!... we both feel so aggrieved that we had to pay the duty and then to see it abolished and back dated only to Jan 07 (i think)..not only that but house prices are starting to plummet (we bought in 06) and are starting to feel robbed!!
Is there anything that can be done? Is joe Duffy my best option ?
The new rules should be clear on the cut-off point for paying or not paying SD in such circumstances. If you fell into the former category under these rules then there is nothing that you or Joe Duffy can do about it.
The announcement was made in June 07 backdated to March 07 so that would have made your transaction 9 months old by then.
If they had of increased it due to a faltering economy would you be looking to pay the difference?
The state collected nearly €3 billion in stamp duty on property transactions during 2006. There may be a lot of FTBs out there who may had paid even closer to the cut off date. An action group is required.
Don't know why it's causing arguments TBH - many many many people paid stamp duty at higher rates (myself included) before the rates changed. We knew about it when we bought our houses and so it wasn't a surprise, it was just disappointing (to say the least!) when the rates dropped afterwards. It's money paid and over and done with - let's hope it went to build a new hospital or something and let it go!
