Can I make an offer without a solicitor?

Hi,

Probably a stupid question, but I've just seen an apartment that I like and am interested in making an offer. Can I make one before I get a solicitor or do I need the solicitor first? Or can I wait until offer is accepted before getting solicitor? I wasn't planning on looking at anything or buying for 6 months or more but this place just sort of fell into my lap so am a little unprepared.

Yes you can, I made an offer on an apartment last week and paid a booking deposit before getting a solicitor. It's probably a good idea to get mortgage approval in principal from whatever bank you'll be dealing with before making an offer just to make sure you can afford it.

Until you sign contracts the offer is not binding but you would want to clarify whether any deposit that might be paid is refundable or not. I guess you can make an offer without a solicitor but it might be more prudent to engage on before doing so.

You're just bidding at the moment. You don't need a solicitor to do this on your behalf. When your offer has been accepted, you then need to have a solicitor ready.

If you are dealing with a reputable estate agent no need to have solicitor until your bid has been accepted. If no estate agent involved you really should have solicitor on board.
One way or another do not under any circumstances commit anything in writing before you engage your solicitor ( unless everything is marked clearly "subject to Contract" )as to do so could inadvertently see you commiting to a purchase even before formal contracts are signed.
