Can I leave debts accumulated in the UK behind?

This might seem a silly question, but I heard through a friend of a friend that if I were to leave the UK(where I was living) and move to another country, then the debt could be "left behind", and wouldn't be traced to me.
I have recently moved back to Ireland permanently and I am giving this some serious thought, but I don't want to get myself in to trouble either. The debt is approx 12,000 sterling with just the one company.
Any ideas anyone?
