Can I disable the mute switch on my iPhone?

Sometimes when I am speaking on my phone, my ear hits the mute button, so the person to whom I am speaking can't hear me.

It seems to me to be a stupid place to have a mute button. Can I switch it off?

I am not trying to mute my phone when it's ringing. I am trying to stop myself from muting myself.

Your iPhone has a proximity sensor that turns off the screen when you have your phone up to you ear so that you cannot accidentally tap any on screen buttons while on a call. Maybe this is no longer working on your phone?

The sensor is on the top of the phone near the front facing camera and phone speaker. Make a test call and place your finger over it. If it's working well the screen should turn on and off.

A quick reset may resolve issues with the proximity sensor, hold the home button and on/off switch for about 10 seconds until you see the apple logo.

I'm not aware of a way to disable the mute call button. Maybe there's an option if it's jaibroken.
 
Ditto on the proximity sensor thing. If you tend to pull the phone away from your ear during calls the screen can get enabled, causing problems. If you can't fix it any other way, then switch to the keypad screen during calls. At least that way the only thing you can do is press number keys with your ear, causing annoying beeps during the call.

I don't see that sensor. This is what my phone looks like

I think I know what the problem is. I broke the screen some time ago and had it replaced. After that, I had some problems with the phone being unresponsive. That is fixed now, but it's maybe the proximity sensor is not getting through the new screen?

I have reset it, so I will see if that works.
