Can Asylum Seeker be a Board Director as a volunteer

Is it possibly for Asylum Seeker to be nominated to the Board of Directors as a volunteer? Is there any irish law that would prevent this? I know they can't work in Ireland but this is not paid position. The company is a non-profit and all members of the Board are volunteers.

What sort of structure is this?

Some voluntary organisations are 'limited by guarantee' but they are Companies in every other sense of the word. The Articles of Association and Memorandum of Association could contain restrictions but unlikely.

So long as its approved in general meeting or by the Board filling a casual vacancy.

There are no formal qualifications needed as Courtney in Law of Companies suggests - (s)he could be as thick as two planks.

The person must consent.

A friend of mine who is an asylum seeker has been a director of a very well known organisation who are registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee without a Share Capital - basically a non-profit organisation. No issues here

Thank you for both answers. It's a company Limited by Guarantee (without a Share Capital) as far as I know. If I'm wrong I will correct this. It's a non-profit organisation and has a Board of Directors as I said above, where all members are volunteers-they can't do any paid work for the company. The problem is that if Asylum Seekers can't work in Ireland than is there anything else they can't do, for example if she/he was nominated as a Treasurer could he/she make financial decisions (relating to the company). The person (Asylum Seeker) is very well educated and would be very valuable for the company.
