Can a Windows download be 'spoofed'?

Reason I'm asking is I have the usual yellow shield type icon in my tray but it's at only 5% after two hours! I've never known an update to take so long.

PC running slow (could be the update itself, if legit?) but Avast, Superantispyware, CCleaner and Glary utilities all clear. Defragged and did a system restore too. Using Vodafone mobile BB and the connection isn't great but it's not that bad - e.g. browsing at a reasonable speed, it's just the program and file opening that is sluggish.

XP SP3

Should I be concerned?
 
Some of the updates you don't need. Check your not downloading 1GB of Asian Language updates.
 
OK thanks but after a day and a half getting downloads to 100%, I restart the PC and the icon comes up again "downloading updates 0%" !!

PC still slow. This doesn't seem right?!
 
It isn't right. Dunno what the prob is tho'. I stopped dl/ing updates just before SP3- heard it made XP slow as a dog.
