Thinking of getting a Camcorder / Video camera.

Lots of different media types and options to chose from - mini tape, DVD, HD

Any recommendations / experiences - makes, value, performance features ?

Thanks

Do you want to be able to edit your movies? Then go mini-DV (good quality, cheaper) or HDV (expensive, may not be compatible with your TV).

If you have no intention of editing your home movies a DVD camera would be OK. Picture quality may not be as good as DV, but would probably be good enough for most casual users.

As for makes, I have experience of using Sony and Canon camcorders and both are excellent, with very good quality lenses, which is important. But ultimately you should only buy the features you want. If you are going to be a casual user go for something that's easy to use. Go into a camera shop and don't be shy, handle all the models in your price range.

Good luck!

Recently bought the brother a Sony DCR-HC19E, he's very impressed with it. It's mini-DV, comes with USB cable and software for your movie editing - although by all accounts a different software package is a recommendation.

He had no prior experience with camcorders, and said it was very easy to use. I'd look at buying from some of the UK website after you decide on the model you like.
