I have visited San Diego Zoo but while wild horses managed to drag me to Six Flags Magic Mountain, I put down my foot after that and refused point blank to be subjected to Disney as well
. I can't really recall any particular details on tickets etc though. San Diego Zoo is an excellent zoo and the city itself is a very pleasant place - well worth visiting. I enjoyed both though it was only a short visit. Trains run from downtown LA to San Diego and while not fast, they do meander along the coast and it can be a beautiful ride. Must sees - what sort of thing do you want to see? I have spent quite a bit of time in the LA area so it would be the one I know best. I wasn't a fan of Hollywood (too seedy and grubby) but Santa Monica/Venice Beach and Beverly Hills are worth visiting, plenty of unusual architecture, quirky shops, fantastic beaches, weirdly familiar sights and just plain old people watching is a rich exercise. Stop off to get cupcakes from the [broken link removed]. LA has mountains right into the city and a drive along Mulholland is worth doing, as is a trip to Griffith Park and the Observatory, you can go horse-riding there. Head out to
Santa Catalina island for a real SoCal getaway and some of the best preserved native wildlife (snakes included!). Check out the fantastic museums that LA has to offer on just about every topic (they have a shuttle in the science museum) and be sure to drop by the La Brea Tar Pits and watch the scientists at work. Eat at a burger at SoCal's favourite burger chain,
In 'n' Out and see if you can catch a game, or better yet, a tail-gate party at a game at the Pasadena Rose Bowl. American Football is not the most enthralling of games to watch (read - boring and slow, basically the purpose of cheer leaders is to let you know when to look at the pitch!) but they make a big day of a game and usually have a bit of a party out of the boot of their car or pick-up near the venue. LA is plane mad and is actually worth seeing from the air, book a flight tour, there are balloon, helicopter and plane options. Can't think of anything else right now but if I do I will post up. Oh, for a really quirky and unusual LA sight check out
Watt's Towers - it is a part of LA visitors rarely go to and yet it is one of the most distinctive and unique of LA sights (it is in South Central which puts most people off). There is parking or alternatively the Blue Line metro has a stop there.
