In general, what are peoples opinions of the potential of property in Calabria, Italy? There is a lot of capital projects ongoing, particularly infrastructural, and there is a huge interest from Irish and UK investors. Good Buy?
 
Hi, i don't mean to be an a**, but if you ever were there you'd see what the place is like. There are 100s of half built buildings all over the land (actually probably 1000s over the land); at least the parts I was in. It is the region where the mafia is most prominent; it is relatively poor - the story we heard is that the govt. gave some grants to build the place up. The mafia took advantage of these and started building, but once they got the grants they stopped building. I saw one house on a cliffside over looking the sea, absolutely idyllic, but it was never finished and nobody was inside. In short, I wouldn;t buy there.

I heard that about the mafia too. Where I live we have a lot of Italian ex-pats originally from Calabria, I don't know if they are trying to big up the whole Italian steriotype but they always say there is a lot of Mafia there and it causes problems with building.

I'm going to visit Puglia later in the spring, it looks like a nice area of Italy, is lower in price than a lot of other areas and I want to see if those round tower ruins have much profit in them if you renovate.

I dont mean to be an a^^^ but that is an unfair generalisation. Granted, parts of Calabria are more attractive than others but there are some beautiful towns such as Scilla and Tropea. You're judging the region on towns such as Siderno.
Thats like classing Moyross as the west coast of ireland or South Armagh as Northern Ireland!
 
Now Puglia was, from a personal perspective, the nicest part of Italy I visited. We stayed outside of Bari in a place called Castellana Grotte if your interested... it was great. Food is great.

I don't believe there's value to be had in Calabria, although it is a beautiful region.
