By or Bye Election??

Which is it?

George Lee has "bye-election" on his posters, others have "by-election"

Heard something about this on the radio.

I think the upshot was (in the general tradition of the illogical and pot pourri language that is English) that both are permissable.

By the way, will Ned O' Keeffe get a bye into the European Parliament in a few years time if Brian Crowley is the boy selected by FF to run for President next time round, seeing as Mary will have to say bye-bye after her two terms?

Only posting this as a by the bye really as the situation wouldn't cause a by-election or a bye-election either.................
