Buying Shares

I want to buy some shares in a large American company - but I have absolutely no idea how to go about it.

I wouldn't be investing alot - ~€1000

Can anyone offer any pointers as to where I can do some more research?

I have done some googling already but have come away confused. Any help would be appreciated.

I have just done similar. E-mailed campbell o'connor (www.camocon.ie)
in dublin & asked them how I would go about purchasing a small amount of shares. They forwarded a Client Registration form which I completed enclosing the usual required anti-money laundering documentation and posted it off. Got email to say account had been set up for me. Yesterday I emailed them listing the shares I wanted to purchase and asked how much I should write the cheque for (including admin fees). Posted off cheque yest. Very simple and straightforward. I have no link with campbell o'connor - just one of the recommended stockbrokers on this site and I followed up on it. So far so good.
