Buying part of pre 1963 building

Does anyone have any experience of this situation? This is an old building converted pre 1963 to two apartments. One upstairs and one downstairs.
Both apartments were previously owned by the same person and two relatives inherited an apartment each. One of whom is selling the upstairs apartment. Is this a bad idea?

The seller or the buyer?

A seller, presumably, wants to sell - but if there are any issues, if any, it may not be straightforward.

A cash buyer can ' take a view' on any (if any) defective title/planning matters.

A buyer, funded by a loan, may find a lender very stringent on any (if any) defective title/planning matters.
Or anything which may make compulsory title registration difficult, if not impossible.

Legal/architect (or engineer) advices required on both sides.

A bad idea as in difficult for me to register it in the LR and for me to sell it in the future. I'm a cash buyer but the next person may not be.

your solicitor should be able to advise if there are any problems with title or planning and further advise if you should proceed with any purchase prior to those (if any ) issues being rectified....

Are you saying that it is not correctly registered at the moment? If the vendor is not prepared to put the work in to remedy that prior to a sale, walk away. Your solicitor will confirm all that is in order as a matter of course, but you can do some research yourself in advance and perhaps save yourself getting too invested to the point you make a poor decision.
